Bogen givet et særligt indblik i Epiktets filosofiske livskunst som en terapeutisk pædagogik eller pædagogisk terapi. Bogen viser, hvordan Epiktet organiserede filosofien omkring en filosofisk skole, hvis funktion var at være terapeutisk klinik for heling af psykiske lidelser. Herefter demonstrerer bogen, hvordan denne pædagogik i praksis bestod af de tre aspekter korrektion, transformation og træning, og at den var struktureret som en særlig form for filosofiundervisning. Afslutningsvis kastes et udblik til den aktuelle relevans af Epiktets lære i forhold til de eksistentielle udfordringer, som det senmoderne menneske er præget af.
