I Hellenismen og Romerriget blev den filosofiske livskunst blandt andet forstået som en terapeutisk praksis. I dag er dette område defineret af psykologer og psykoterapeuter, der ofte opfatter deres praksis som adskilt fra filosofien. I de senere år er der opstået en stigende interesse for at genoplive og modernisere antikkens filosofiske livskunst, ligesom at den eksistentielle terapi har udviklet sig til en moderne filosofisk livskunst.

Bogen giver en introduktion til den filosofiske terapi. I den forbindelse stiller bogen skarpt på spørgsmålene om, hvorvidt der overhovedet er en berettigelse i at udøve filosofisk terapi i det 21. århundrede, og på hvilke måder den filosofiske livskunst i givet fald kan udgøre et brugbart alternativ til den mere konventionelle og medicinske tilgang til den kliniske psykologi og psykoterapi.
