Bogen bidrager til den aktuelle genoplysning af filosofien som en praktisk livskunst, der samtidig er en dødskunst. Bogen følger en række hellenistiske og romerske filosoffer i deres forståelse af den filosofiske livskunst som baseret på en spirituel omdannelse af mennesket, der medfører en social atilpasning. Samtidig ser bogen på en række aktuelle forbindelser imellem den hellenistiske og romerske livskunst og udviklingen af det 21. århundredes eksistentielfænomenologiske terapi, herunder især eksistensanalysen og Daseinsanalysen.
