Synopsis
Affordance beskriver et objekt eller sted i form af de handlinger, der er muliggjort i mødet med et design (eller ikke-design). Affordance er et nøglebegreb på tværs af alle designskalaer, da det giver os mulighed for ikke kun at forstå et sted, en struktur eller et objekt i form af dets fysiske, æstetiske og materielle egenskaber, men også hvordan disse relaterer til menneskers eller dyrs evner og deres muligheder for handlinger. For at en genstand "kan være gribelig, skal en genstand have modsatte overflader adskilt af en afstand mindre end håndens spændvidde." (Gibson, 1979, s. 133). På den måde søger affordancer at fange den mulige relation, komplementariteten af tingene eller miljøets egenskaber og menneskets evner og hensigt.
